Cloud-Based Video Content Processing

About

NBCUniversal is a leading media company that operates several popular television networks and streaming services, including the Peacock streaming platform. As the demand for streaming services continues to grow, NBCUniversal identified the need to improve its video content processing capabilities to ensure a smooth and uninterrupted streaming experience for its customers. Quantilus fulfilled the need by developing a scalable cloud-based video processing service.

Challenge

NBCUniversal faced several challenges in its video processing pipeline, including scalability, reliability, and cost-effectiveness. The existing infrastructure was unable to handle the growing volume of video content, resulting in delays and buffering issues during streaming. Additionally, the hardware infrastructure required frequent maintenance and upgrades, resulting in significant overhead costs.

Solution

Quantilus designed and implemented a cloud computing infrastructure capable of processing large volumes of video content in real-time, enabling NBCUniversal to ensure the seamless delivery of video content to its customers.

Quantilus utilized several advanced technologies and tools, including Amazon Web Services (AWS), Docker, and Kubernetes, to develop a scalable and reliable video processing pipeline. The solution included components for content ingestion, content management, media processing, content delivery, user management, and analytics. By using these advanced technologies and tools, Quantilus was able to ensure that the streaming service’s pipeline was fulfilled continually, providing a high-quality viewing experience for Peacock’s users. The solution also incorporated features such as auto-scaling, load balancing, and failover mechanisms, ensuring high availability and scalability.

The cloud infrastructure used to process and store the video content was designed with security in mind, including features such as network segmentation, data encryption, and intrusion detection & prevention.

The cloud-based video processing service provided NBCUniversal with several benefits, including:

  • Scalability: The new infrastructure can process large volumes of video content in real-time, ensuring that the streaming pipeline is fulfilled continually.
  • Reliability: The cloud infrastructure is highly available, with built-in failover mechanisms to ensure uninterrupted video streaming.
  • Cost-Effectiveness: The new infrastructure is more cost-effective than the existing hardware-based infrastructure, as it requires minimal maintenance and upgrades.
  • Improved Customer Experience: The improved video processing capabilities ensure a smooth and uninterrupted streaming experience for NBCUniversal’s customers.
  • Flexibility: The cloud-based infrastructure is highly flexible, enabling NBCUniversal to quickly scale up or down its video processing capabilities based on demand.
  • Security: The solution incorporated a combination of security measures to provide a comprehensive and effective security framework for the Peacock streaming platform.

The partnership between NBCUniversal and Quantilus resulted in the development of a highly scalable and reliable cloud-based video processing service. This solution enabled NBCUniversal to improve the quality of its streaming services while reducing overhead costs. The project demonstrates the value of leveraging advanced cloud technologies and tools to develop scalable and cost-effective solutions for media companies.
